1. Safety precautions: Wear protective gloves and goggles. Make sure the room is well ventilated. Power off the printer according to the manufacturer's official procedures to prevent electrical damage.
2. Run a nozzle check: Before cleaning, always print a nozzle check pattern. This gives you a "before cleaning" picture that identifies which printheads or channels are clogged so you can focus.
3. Enter maintenance mode: Set the printer to manual maintenance mode. This will unlock the printhead carriage, allowing you to move it freely to access the printheads and ink pump station.
4. Prepare the tools: Take a new, clean, lint-free cotton swab. Lightly moisten the swab with an approved cleaning fluid - it should be damp, but not dripping. An oversaturated swab may cause liquid to flow into the electronics.
5. Clean the ink pump station and wiper blade: Gently wipe the rubber edge of the ink pump station to remove any ink deposits. A clean, sealed ink pump station is essential. Then, carefully wipe the rubber wiper blade from top to bottom to remove any accumulated ink residue.
6. Gently wipe the printhead surface: With a new, moistened cotton swab, wipe the printhead surface in a unidirectional, smooth motion (for example, from front to back, or from the center out). This prevents dragging debris from one nozzle area to another. Use a new cotton swab for each wipe.
7. Run a light automatic cleaning cycle: After manual cleaning, return the printhead carriage to its original position, turn the machine back on, and run a "light cleaning" cycle from the menu. This will refill the nozzles with fresh ink.
8. Verify the results: Print another nozzle check pattern. Compare the "after cleaning" picture with the "before cleaning" picture. If the nozzles are now clear, your cleaning was successful. If there is still a partial blockage, you can repeat this process once. If the problem persists, move on to advanced troubleshooting.
